HP Pathway with NonStop TS/MP software provides application server functionality that allows you to develop and deploy mission-critical online transaction processing (OLTP) applications on HP Integrity NonStop and HP Integrity NonStop BladeSystem servers. Using this software, developers can concentrate on implementing business logic without being concerned with common application services such as load balancing, communications I/O, memory management, fault tolerance, and/or threading and scheduling. These common services are provided for you by the Pathway with NonStop TS/MP application server software, comprising a run-time execution environment and a set of APIs. In this way, Pathway with NonStop TS/MP supplies a high-performance, highly available OLTP environment that is built in—rather than programmed in. With it, programmers can focus on the required business logic; the infrastructure takes care of the rest automatically.

Important new features in version 2.4
The latest release of Pathway with NonStop TS/MP software, version 2.4, is available now and includes significant new features:
  • Online application upgrade with Pathway domains
  • Large Pathsend message support
  • Performance and capacity increases
  • Other important enhancements
With these new features in version 2.4, Pathway users can take full advantage of the increased power of HP Integrity NonStop servers. This combination of new software and hardware provides a continued growth path for Pathway users as well as unparalleled performance and availability for the most demanding mission-critical OLTP applications—Pathway for the 21st century.

Online application upgrade with Pathway domains
Pathway with NonStop TS/MP version 2.3 software introduced the Pathway domains feature, which improves application availability by eliminating planned outages, and increases Pathway configuration limits. Pathway domains enable you to configure multiple, identical Pathway environments (PATHMONs) that can behave as a single, large Pathway application. Any of the environments within a domain may be taken down in turn for reconfiguration, while the remaining environments within the domain continue processing work with no interruption. This enables online rebalancing of Pathway environments and prevents loss of service typically encountered whenever an update must be made to a running Pathway system. By replicating an application environment across a Pathway domain, the configuration limits of a single Pathway environment are removed. The maximum number of environments which may be included within a Pathway domain is four, so the configuration limits of a single Pathway environment may be increased by up to four times by using the Pathway domain feature.

  • Serverclasses are replicated across all environments in the domain
  • Requests are transparently load-balanced across the domain by the Application Cluster Services (ACS) execution infrastructure.
  • You can manage the environments within a domain using a new single-user interface called the Pathway Domain Management Interface (PDMI).
With Pathway with NonStop TS/MP version 2.4 software, this capability is significantly enhanced to include online upgrade of Pathway application objects themselves. A Pathway environment within the domain may be taken down and then brought back up with new versions of SCOBOL and/or server application objects, to apply fixes or provide new services, with no loss of application availability. This feature includes control of versioning such that all active application objects within the domain remain consistent (i.e. the same version), and any dependencies between updated SCOBOL and associated server application objects are maintained.

The PDMI interface is also improved to allow single “domain-level” commands which are applied across all of the Pathway environments in the domain (as opposed to having to operate on each Pathway environment independently).

Large Pathsend message support
With the increasing usage of large message structures such as XML documents, the 32KB maximum single Pathsend message size limit has become a significant restriction. HP is very pleased to announce that with Pathway with NonStop TS/MP version 2.4 software, this single Pathsend message size limit has been raised to 2MB. This is achieved by support for new APIs which must be used by both requesters and servers wishing to use large Pathsend messages. Very important note – upward compatibility is maintained, and existing applications which do not wish to take advantage of this new feature do not need to change to work with version 2.4, the current APIs will continue to operate as normal.

In addition, NonStop SOAP and JToolkit for NonStop Servers, are being enhanced to take advantage of this new large Pathsend message support. These enhancements enable applications using these other products to exploit the large Pathsend message capability, and will greatly facilitate for example the deployment of SOA, web services, and Java applications on HP NonStop servers. Performance and capacity increases
In order to fully exploit the increased capacity of the HP Integrity NonStop server, an ongoing process of raising and removing Pathway limits has been underway. The following limits were increased by Pathway with NonStop TS/MP version 2.3 software:
  • More requesters per processor—Up from 1024 to the limits of the processor
  • More server classes per processor—Up from 1024 to 4045
  • More Pathway environments per processor—Up from 256 to 4046
This process is continued for Pathway with NonStop TS/MP version 2.4 software:
  • Greater server link capacity per processor—Up from 4045 to 8191
  • More concurrent sends per processor: Up from 4045 to 8191
In addition, Pathway with NonStop TS/MP version 2.4 provides users with a means to better control server placement (CPU weighting) – resulting in better (more balanced) processor utilization.

Other important enhancements
Pathway with NonStop TS/MP version 2.4 software also includes other significant enhancements:
  • Pathcom now supports the FC/HISTORY/! commands, enabling recently issued commands to be recalled.
  • Changes to Pathway configurations made using Pathcom are logged to facilitate auditing.
  • Efficiency improvements in Pathmon processing have been made when no links are available, and when links are rejected.
  • The granularity of the CREATEDELAY parameter is increased (to centiseconds).
New Pathway with NonStop TS/MP software and the HP Integrity NonStop server—Pathway for the 21st century
The enhancements provided with the latest version of Pathway with NonStop TS/MP software allow Pathway applications to take full advantage of the power and capacity of HP Integrity NonStop and HP Integrity NonStop BladeSystem servers. This combination of new software and hardware provides a continued growth path for Pathway users, as well as unparalleled performance and availability for the most demanding business-critical OLTP applications.
