As part of the continuing drive to bring class-leading features, flexibility, and performance to its customers, HP is pleased to offer HP Virtual TapeServer (VTS), a comprehensive virtual tape technology for use with HP NonStop S-series and Integrity NonStop servers. HP VTS is now available for order from HP.
HP VTS can be described as a fully emulated tape drive, or drives, backing up data onto a physical disk. In a virtual tape environment, tape operations on the NonStop S-series or on the Integrity NonStop server appear to be identical to operations in an environment that includes physical tape, using the same backup and restore software and catalogs.
HP VTS uses industry-standard fault-resilient HP ProLiant servers, HP RAID storage hardware, and state-of-the-art software products integrated and developed by OEM partner, Tape Laboratories Inc., a subsidiary of Crossroads Systems, Inc., a leader in virtual tape technology. SCSI or Fibre Channel connections from the NonStop server that would otherwise be directed across a physical cable to a NonStop or Integrity Nonstop server–supported tape device are instead directed across the very same physical cable to a port on a ProLiant server. A software process emulates a physical tape drive and directs the I/O to a “virtual tape volume,” which is actually a physical disk file on the RAID storage hardware or on disk storage internal to the ProLiant server.
HP VTS is fully supported for use with the NonStop operating system Release Version Update (RVU) G06.10 and later for NonStop S-series servers and all RVUs of Integrity NonStop servers. HP VTS has been fully tested in the NonStop environment and is supported by HP’s worldwide delivery and support organizations.
HP VTS technology offers increased efficiencies, reduced costs, and more productive resource utilization, resulting in faster, simpler storage solutions. HP VTS provides the most modern, powerful, and flexible virtual tape solution in the industry. Today, more than 50 NonStop server customers are realizing the benefits of HP VTS in their production and development environments.
Benefits of HP Virtual TapeServer
The following is a summary of the potential improvements in tape operations efficiencies:
- Improved Backup and Restore performance
- Files restored from virtual tape volumes can be available in seconds
- Reduction in physical tape media costs and improved media utilization
- Fewer physical tapes and virtual tape volume “stacking”
- Greatly improved scalability of tape operations capacity
- Reduction in physical tape drives and floor-space requirements
- Improved flexibility in physical tape backup file sets, retention, and so on
- Physical backups take place “in the background” from the virtual tape environment
- Enterprisewide, heterogeneous leveraging of tape storage resources
HP VTS provides compelling value for NonStop S-series and Integrity NonStop server customers. HP’s sales organization can provide detailed quotes and configuration information for HP VTS.
