You’ve heard all about HP NonStop Transaction Management Facility (NonStop TMF) 3.2 software at ITUG Summit 2003 and at recent regional user group (RUG) meetings. With the installation of release version update (RVU) G06.22 of the HP NonStop operating system, you can choose to enable additional features for your NonStop servers so that ”failure is not an option.”
- Audit trail retention (ATR)
- Disk media dump (DMD) enhancement
- File recovery to new location (FRNL)
- Disaster recovery to new system (DRNS)
- TMF component startup tracking
- Round-robin tape usage
- Recover files dump serial option
Audit trail retention (ATR)
Gives users a way to instruct NonStop TMF software to retain restored audit-trail files. This feature is useful because when multiple serial or parallel recoveries are performed, audit-trail files might have been restored from tape multiple times.
Disk media dump (DMD) enhancement
Helps minimize the recovery time objective (RTO) when performing any type of recovery in which audit-trail files must be restored from disk by reading them from the original dump disk. This feature is useful because audit-trail files no longer need to be copied from the dump disks, thereby decreasing the recovery time.
File recovery to new location (FRNL)
Allows dumped files to be recovered and saved to a different location on the same system instead of where they were dumped originally.
Disaster recovery to new system (DRNS)
Allows a set of online dumps, audit dumps, and a copy of the NonStop TMF catalog to be used to restore files to a system with a different node name and number than the node from which the files were originally dumped. This enables disaster recovery without renaming or renumbering systems and can be used for the initial loading of files to be replicated with NonStop Remote Database Facility (NonStop RDF) software. Support Note S02073A describes how the DRNS feature is used.
TMF component startup tracking
Helps isolate any problems that occur during the startup phase of NonStop TMF software by adding Event Management Service (EMS) messages for each subsystem. This feature is useful because, during NonStop TMF software startup, many TMF subsystems must function properly for a successful START TMF.
Round robin tape usage
Allows tapes to be selected in a round-robin fashion, so that previously used scratch tapes are not used again until absolutely required. Round-robin tape usage is valuable because NonStop TMF software reuses TMF tape volumes alphabetically, which means some tapes can be used much more than others. This feature provides additional recovery protection and is also beneficial for tape silos.
Recover files dump serial option
Supports specification of a dump serial number to better control which dumps are used. For example, you can easily recover a previous version of a file by specifying an earlier generation of a dump.

For further details, please visit the ITUG user group website and download ITUG Summit session number P-19-HP, view the most recent manual set in the NonStop Technical Library, or ask your local account team.
NonStop TMF software is included with the NonStop operating system and customers will receive support for these new features automatically when they order an RVU G06.22 site update tape (SUT).
