Managing a cluster of systems is more complex than managing a single system. All of the systems in the cluster have to be monitored individually, and global configuration and control activities, such as startup, shutdown, network configuration, storage configuration, and more must be performed on each system individually. The complexity increases dramatically when managing a heterogeneous cluster consisting of different hardware platforms and operating systems. Moreover, in operating a heterogeneous cluster, system administrators have to deal with a different set of tools, different syntax for commands, and different management interfaces for each platform in the cluster.
