Hewlett Packard announces a new multi-port Gigabit Ethernet capability for its carrier grade (Telco-oriented) servers. The products deliver multiple gigabit per second and multiple 100 megabit per second capability. The product set comes in two models that provide support for 4 or 8 gigabit per second Ethernet ports. The models are sold in pairs for fault tolerance. One model, called the V4SE pair, supports 8 ports: four gigabit per second and four 100 megabit per second ports. The other model, the V8SE pair, supports 16 ports; eight gigabit per second and eight 100 megabit per second ports. The product name that covers both products can be abbreviated as VxSE.

VxSE is releasing first for the HP NonStop Integrity Telco systems. Subsequently, the VxSE will be made available for commercial marketplace including commercial and Telco-use NonStop S-series systems.

The VxSE products provide several benefits over earlier Ethernet offerings. These benefits include: no change to existing applications, increased Ethernet attachability, lower cost per port, built-in fault tolerance, effective controller/host communications, and improved manageability. The ports on the VxSE can be configured for copper or fiber connectivity in the field or at customer sites (that is, there is no need to specify copper or fiber when ordering). See the HP NonStop VxSE Gigabit Ethernet Enclosure, Carrier Grade Data sheet.

HP provides fault tolerant systems for a variety of Telco customers who rely on the high availability of these servers for mission critical applications. Having reliable high-speed Ethernet connectivity is an essential ingredient in meeting such missions which depend on Information Technology in delivering them.
