HP NonStop Remote Database Facility (RDF) software, Version 1, Update 7 is a manageability release with the following new features:

  • NonStop RDF management by any Supergroup Userid, no matter which Userid initially started it
  • NonStop RDF management by any user (non SUPER group)
  • Run with one-way remote passwords (primary to backup)
  • Better security when replicating to a development system
  • Faster file comparison tool
  • Single RDFCOM command to drain and apply all audits up to the time the command was issued
  • New REVERSE option for the “STOP,” NonStop RDF command
  • A simple command to reverse the replication stream so system roles can be reversed
  • Configure triggers that are automatically executed after critical operations (e.g. Takeover and Stop RDF, reverse commands).
  • New event issued when all updaters have stopped and replication is shut down
  • Force takeover even if the Expand network line is up with the “!” option
  • “NOW” option with INITTIME in INITIALIZE NonStop RDF command
Ordering and software maturity information

NonStop RDF Update 7 is available at no additional charge upon request for systems that are licensed for any version of SA43V1 and SA44V1 software. This update will automatically be shipped for new orders after the release date of September 2, 2005. Please note that all versions of NonStop RDF software prior to update 1.7 are now made mature. Fixes and features will be added only to NonStop RDF 1.7 and later versions.

Determining the need for disaster recovery or business continuity

Disaster recovery and business continuity requirements exist across a continuum. Determining whether a business process needs disaster recovery or business continuity depends on two key measurements that affect the complexity and extent of the planning process:

  • Recovery Time Objective (RTO): How long can the business process be unavailable
  • Recovery Point Objective (RPO): How much work in progress can be lost when the process is made available again.

The RTO and RPO differ not only from company to company but also from one business process to another within the same company. A short RTO and a low RPO generally cause recovery measures to be more expensive, but for critical business processes, expense is not an issue. The customer’s attitude to the above will help dictate which NonStop RDF product(s) to purchase.
