HP is announcing the end of sales of the VT5901 Virtual TapeServer 2U server. The VT5901 product, based on the HP ProLiant DL380 G3 2U Server, is one of the HP ProLiant server models offered as part of the HP Virtual TapeServer Product Set used with HP NonStop servers. The VT5901 product has been discontinued from sales in order to make room for a later generation processor–based server with additional configuration flexibility, the ProLiant DL380 G4 Server.
The end of sales for this product is effective immediately. New orders for the VT5901 product will no longer be accepted. Instead, orders for a fully compatible replacement product, the VT5900-C, will be accepted beginning in December 2004.
The VT5901 2U server product became available at the end of the fourth quarter of 2003, along with all the other products that make up the Virtual TapeServer Product Set. When combined with external storage products such as the VT5905 and VT5906 RAID array, the VT5901 product can provide a storage capacity of up to 4 terabytes.
Replacement product
The replacement product for the VT5901 server is also a ProLiant based server. The VT5900-C is based on the ProLiant DL380 G4 Server, which includes the ability to attach the VT5905 and VT5906 RAID arrays, along with including 2 Fibre Channel I/O ports, and 4 SCSI I/O ports.
Ending sales of the VT5901 product will be transparent to customers that have invested in the Virtual TapeServer product, and specifically in the VT5901, to the extent that the VT5900-C product provides all of the configuration possibilities offered with the VT5901. Customers seeking to enlarge an existing Virtual TapeServer configuration may simply insert the VT5900-C product into a configuration where a VT5901 may have been contemplated, along with adding the desired amount of RAID storage.
Customers should also be made aware that HP has a policy of ending hardware maintenance and support for NonStop products five years after the last sale of the product. This is the usual HP practice, supported by a statement of policy on this topic.
